Experimenting with Creative Practice

Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun — Mary Lou Cook

I know some of you were interested in the idea of the studio space I set up in November, and were thinking about ways it might work for your own creative practice, so I wanted to let you have an update on where we’ve got to, since it’s evolving as we go on (yes, through creative practice :-) )

One of the best things to emerge has been a catch-up session once every two weeks, by instant chat.  It’s a chance to touch base, celebrate achievements, explore sticking points, get support, encourage others, and generally get a buzz of creative energy.  The chat format seems to work well and it’s been a real eye-opener for me how well you can get to know others, and the way they work, through this medium.

To get an idea of some of the things we talk about, here’s a wordle word collage of a recent chat.

Some of the other adjustments:

We’re experimenting with a different platform to exchange news, questions, ideas, resources in the times in between (using a Posterous group)

The monthly subscription has been adjusted to $8, and I’ve rewritten the blurb to hopefully better reflect what purpose the group is serving, and how it could work for you.

Here’s the description:

The interest of the group is primarily in getting support through the various tricky parts of the creative process:
  • Building up a practice and making it a regular feature of your life
  • Keeping motivation, energy and momentum
  • Holding on to self-belief, and belief in your own work
  • Dodging the bullets of the inner critic (and other naysayers)
  • Finding the time to develop a regular practice
  • Getting your work ‘out there’

For more information and details on how to join, please check out the page on the creative practice group.

The other bit I should add from the blurb, and my experience of working with this group so far:
It is a small group setting rather than a big network so you can get the chance to know other members.  There are places available, and new members would be very welcome.  It’s a very friendly group of people, so don’t worry about being ‘new’.

Any questions, please do just ask :-)
