Writing ideas from Hittail

Here’s another extra that I’ve added to the site - the new Typepad “Hittail” widget*.  I’m still learning exactly how this works but in essence it provides you with live-time info on hits to your site (and the searches that got your readers there), a summary of key words including an analysis of the ‘Long Tail‘ and - by some feat of magic - suggestions about words you could use in future posts.  All for free for the basic service - for now anyway.

The wording on the widget button is ‘writing ideas by HitTail’.  Now I certainly wouldn’t say it’s responsible for all my writing ideas - but it does help with the writing process a) by suggesting new words (opens up connections, possibilities, things you hadn’t seen before) b) by helping me tune in to the things readers are searching for and c) by reminding me that there are real people, interested readers, at the other end of the search engine.

And at the end of the day it’s them - it’s you, the reader - that we’re writing for, isn’t it?

PS I’m really tickled that the widget is even better than it was ten days ago - they changed it so a click opens a new frame (= not losing your visitors) following a question from me (and great coaching from Blog Angel Claire).  Their open forum, responsiveness to comments and speed to act on improvements is one of the things I like about them :)
