How to comment with confidence

Do you find commenting on other people’s blogs easy?  The rewards are high (especially for blog authors and website owners) but a lot of people are put off by the sense of exposure in the ‘blogosphere’ and an anxiety that their comments are somehow ‘not worthy’.

As a new blog writer I was keen to encourage readers to submit comments to my Coaching Wizardry site, and ended up composing a piece on the art of leaving a comment.  Some of this is around the technicalities which are easy once you get into your stride, but can be off-putting at first.  But I also suggest that you think about your comment in the same way you’d approach any other piece of writing.  For example if you’re worried that your comment is not ‘worthy’ of submitting…

Spend a moment thinking about why you want to comment - is it to offer encouragement, support, an idea, to promote something you’re doing, to make a connection?  Hold on to that thought and it will help you get over your fear and mean you get less hung up on the words.  The positive intention will drive you forward.

I’d also add that blog owners love getting comments - it makes the site look lived in, confirms that people are reading their material, lets them know which topics are of more/less interest and helps to build the sense of network, community and conversation that is such a central feature of a good blogsite.  So don’t be shy, share your comment or question, you might be pleasantly surprised at the response you get…

What’s your experience of leaving comments on blogs?  What are the things that put you off?  Or encourage you to come back and write some more?

Admittedly an old post, but there’s a certain irony that a post about having confidence in writing comments has none whatsoever.

So, here’s one for you, Joanna.

As an aside, I found this blog through Write for Your Life, and I must say it looks very interesting. Keep up the good work!

Matt, how kind of you to take the time to rummage through the archive, and leave a comment on a neglected old post! Thanks so much. It was fun being reminded of this post… ;-)
